Advent through Christmas Eve
Christmas at FUMC
Cantatas, candlelight, a lighted parade float, and 161 children with something to open.
Advent at FUMC runs on two tracks at once: a season of music in the sanctuary, and a season of work in Fellowship Hall — and both of them end on Christmas Eve with candles.
Music in the Sanctuary
Our Christmas cantata is the centerpiece. Most recently the choirs of FUMC Kaufman and College Mound UMC sang Touched by a Child, Touched by a King together — narration, original music and fresh Christmas texts alongside the familiar, from O Come, All Ye Faithful to a joyful setting of In Dulci Jubilo.
The season also brings an evening of Christmas piano with Corey McCurry in the historic sanctuary — traditional and unusual selections played in a virtuosic style, with a love offering received at the door.
Gifts of Love for Kids
Christmas for Kids is the largest thing this church does all December. Wish tags go out in the sanctuary and by email; unwrapped gifts come back to the church by the first week of December; and on Toy Day, parents and guardians pick up their gifts in Fellowship Hall over coffee and donuts. In our most recent year, 161 children woke up to something to open because of it.
Running alongside it, Keep Our Neighbors Warm collects new socks, hats, gloves, scarves and blankets in every size, which are added to the Christmas for Kids bags, the NOW backpacks, and the Christmas Day Meals on Wheels stockings.
Out in Kaufman
FUMC builds a float for the City of Kaufman's Christmas on the Square lighted parade each December — the most recent one a Gingerbread House Nativity. Floats must be lighted, help is always wanted in the build, and there is room on it for anyone who wants to ride.
On Christmas morning, families volunteer together for Christmas Day Meals on Wheels, cooking turkey, ham, dressing, sides and desserts for elderly neighbors who would otherwise spend the day alone.
Christmas Eve
Everything lands on December 24th, at 6:00 p.m., in a Candlelight Service — the Christmas story told once more, carols sung, and the room lit by hand. Bring whoever you like. The poinsettias along the chancel that night are ordered by members in honor or in memory of someone, and the list is worth reading.
