Late October, in the church parking lot

Trunk or Treat

Decorated trunks, a treat walk and games in the parking lot.

Church members back their cars into the parking lot, open the trunks, and spend an evening handing out candy to every child in costume who walks the row.

The Trunks

Every trunk is decorated by the family that brings it, and the range is half the fun: a farm scene with scarecrows and hay, a green car turned into a giant spider complete with fangs and a web across the bumper, a rubber-duck theme with matching T-shirts and hats, a tennis trunk hung with medals and racquets. Costumes are encouraged for grown-ups too, and plenty of people take that seriously.

More Than Candy

Alongside the treat walk there are games spread across the lot — a sand table to dig through for prizes is a reliable favorite — so children who have finished the row have somewhere to go next.

Bring a Trunk

If you would like to decorate a trunk, help with a game, or donate candy, the church office can point you to whoever is organizing this year's event. It is one of the easiest ways to meet the families in our neighborhood, and it takes as much or as little preparation as you want to give it.
