One thing I have myself doing in this graduation/end of the school year season is reflecting on what it was like for me to enter a new chapter in my life, one filled with possibility, uncertainty, and hope. I believe this is a good exercise for all of us, from time to time, to reach back and remember our experiences which we might take for granted years later.
I remember one thing which defined that period in my life was a constant sense of unworthiness. I felt I was simply not good enough – not "special" enough – to chase my desires and dreams. Now, I don't tell you that so you'll feel sorry for me. That was a long time ago and I've hardly that same person. I simply mention it because it makes me think of this passage from Jeremiah 17:7-8, which reads:
Blessed are those who trust in the LORD,
whose trust is the LORD.
They shall be like a tree planted by water,
sending out its roots by the stream.
It shall not fear when heat comes,
and its leaves shall stay green;
in the year of drought it is not anxious,
and it does not cease to bear fruit.
I did not understand in those days how to trust. I did not know how far I was planted away from the stream of God's care, compassion, and nourishment. Instead, I thought I alone had to figure out the plan, and make it happen. But I did not. I only needed to learn how to root myself in God, and let that strengthen and nourish me.
It's an important lesson for all of us, whether or not we find ourselves entering a new phase in life, whether we're comfortable in a routine or staring down a daunting possibility. We don't need all the answers. We need the nourishment of God. Of Jesus' presence. Of the help of God's spirit, so that we may not fear when the heat comes.
See you Sunday!
